Open Wind Connections – from Gospel to Balkan and back…

This workshop is for wind instruments and brass but can also include percussion. Together and mainly without notation we will create a real band sound and learn some of the classics from the New Orleans and Balkan Brass traditions- musics that have always traditionally been learned “by ear”. During the journey we will also dive into the world of overtones and harmonics, exploring some of the fundamental building blocks of not only music as we know it, but also universal laws of frequency and vibration.

Whomever has experienced Hayden Chisholm live will know what kind of energy and sound this charismatic player and teacher can produce. After several decades of traveling the world with music, both performing and teaching, this New Zealand saxophonist who now lives in Belgrade is passionate about sharing his experiences in sound with his students. During the workshop he uses songs from the spiritual and balkan traditions to internalize and realize the intonation and vibrational work he has studied in depth.

By the of the workshop the participants would have learned about the structure and application of the overtone series, several classic songs from the New Orleans, Spiritual  and Balkan Brass reportoire and also learned about soling and band playing in these formats.

Since 12 years he has taught a summer course on the Pelion mountain in Greece focusing on the teaching of Pythagoras morphed into a village party band which has achieved legendary status in the village of Agios Lavrentios. Now, for the first time he will share his experiences in Spain in a setting open to players of all levels, as long as they bring along open ears and a readiness to free dive into the deep end..
